How can we ensure quality and dignified aging in a society with an increasing number of older adults?

From loneliness and diverse life experiences to palliative care and treatment in hospitals – these were some of the key topics of the international symposium    Zlatne godine   , which took place on 5 and 6 October 2026 in Trakošćan, Croatia. Among the experts who helped shape the discussion on the future of care for older adults with their contributions were also representatives of Alma Mater Europaea University.

The third edition of the international gerontology-geriatric and public health symposium Zlatne godine brought together more than 150 participants from Croatia and abroad. The event, organized by Varaždin General Hospital and University North, was intended for the exchange of professional insights, research findings, and good practices in the field of ageing and the quality of life of older adults.

Alma Mater with several professional contributions

An important role at the symposium was played by Professor Emerita Dr Jana Goriup of Alma Mater Europaea University, who co-moderated the professional programme together with Associate Professor Primarius Dr Sc Spomenka Tomek-Roksandić from Libertas International University in Zagreb.

In her contribution "Loneliness – an epidemic among older adults?", Professor Emerita Dr Jana Goriup opened one of the more pressing issues of contemporary society: loneliness in later life. The topic highlights that quality ageing is not linked only to physical health, but also to interpersonal relationships, a sense of belonging, and inclusion in society.

Associate Professor Dr Nataša Štandeker, in her contribution "The same age, different ageing experiences: did individuals who age successfully really have easier lives?", highlighted the diversity of life paths and ageing experiences. The contribution encouraged reflection on how differently individuals experience old age and what shapes their quality of life.

An important aspect of healthcare was presented by Associate Professor Dr Mateja Berčan in her contribution "The needs of patients in palliative home care – the perspective of a community nurse". She brought to the forefront the needs of patients receiving palliative care in their home environment, as well as the perspective of community nursing care.

About the experiences of older adults in the healthcare system spoke Senior Lecturer Šefik Salkunić, MSc, who, in addition to his work at Alma Mater, also comes from the University Medical Centre Maribor. In his contribution "From the door to treatment: how older adults experience entry into the hospital environment", he addressed the importance of an individual’s experience when being admitted to hospital care.

Professor Emerita Dr Jana Goriup also participated in a joint international professional contribution on undergraduate and master's education in the field of geriatrics and gerontology, which involved experts from various universities, healthcare institutions, and other organizations.

Quality ageing requires connecting knowledge and practice

Population ageing is one of the important social challenges that requires cooperation among various disciplines – from medicine and nursing to psychology, social gerontology, and education.

The diversity of contributions by Alma Mater representatives clearly shows how broad the field of ageing research is. Understanding the needs of older adults includes both healthcare treatment and social relationships, life experiences, and access to appropriate support.

The international symposium Zlatne godine provided an opportunity to connect researchers, higher education teachers, and practitioners, and to exchange views on approaches that can contribute to a better quality of life for older adults.

Through its participation in the symposium, Alma Mater Europaea University is strengthening its presence in the international professional arena and contributing to the development of knowledge and the discussion on the future of ageing, healthcare, and intergenerational connection.
