Mojca Ramšak, Anthropology of Smell

Mojca Ramšak, Anthropology of Smell

The book Anthropology of Smell by Professor Mojca Ramšak examines smell from a socio-cultural perspective and, in an erudite, reader-friendly style and with numerous illustrations, offers important reflections on the sense of smell and smell that go beyond anatomy and physiology.

The author places ideas about smell and the sense of smell in culturally diverse environments; she addresses the non-self-evidence of putting smell into words; she considers it as part of memories, prejudices, rumours, feelings and sexuality; she offers insight into the role of smell in literature, film art, intangible cultural heritage and museum practices; and she precisely describes the legal regulation of odours and the background of scent marketing.

The book was published on the 20th anniversary of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage under the patronage of UNESCO and within the framework of research in the basic project “Smell and Intangible Cultural Heritage” (ARIS; J7-50233), led by Mojca Ramšak.

About the author: Mojca Ramšak is a full professor of anthropology at Alma Mater Europaea – ISH, the Faculty of Humanistic Studies in Ljubljana, and a full professor of cultural and social anthropology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
