Our Vice-Rector Dr. Tomažič among the world elite

10. 4. 2026

We are proud to announce that our Vice-Rector for Research, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luka Martin Tomažič, has been selected as a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) – a prestigious international organization that brings together the most promising young women and men researchers from around the world.

Selection for membership in the GYA is exceptionally selective, as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomažič was chosen among more than 300 candidates. This achievement confirms his scientific excellence, international recognition, and significant contribution to the development of research and society.

Global Young Academy was established at the initiative of discussions within the World Economic Forum in Davos, and today operates under the auspices of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The academy brings together outstanding young scientists from different disciplines and promotes interdisciplinary cooperation, open science, science diplomacy, and the transfer of knowledge to society. It also plays an important role as a connecting platform for the network of national young academies worldwide.

The new generation of GYA members for 2026 includes 33 researchers from 26 countries, further confirming the academy’s global diversity and interdisciplinarity. Among this year’s selected members are, for the first time, representatives from Chad, Malawi, and Cuba, thereby further strengthening the GYA’s geographical representation. Members come from various scientific fields, and the selection is based on a multi-round international evaluation process that includes expert peer review and assessment of both scientific excellence and candidates’ societal engagement.

Members will be officially appointed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will take place on 30 June 2026 in Bremen, Germany. As part of their work in the GYA, they will contribute to shaping global scientific initiatives, advising on science policies, and strengthening the role of science in addressing key societal challenges.

The selection of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luka Martin Tomažič to the Global Young Academy represents an important recognition both for him personally and for our institution, as it confirms the quality of our research environment and its integration into the international scientific community.

Sincere congratulations!
