Who is responsible when artificial intelligence helps with research?

15. 10. 2026

As part of the events and preparations for AI Week Maribor 2026, organized by Alma Mater Europaea University, Associate Professor Dr. Matej Mertik, Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies, and Assistant Professor Dr. Gašper Pirc, a lecturer at the ISH Faculty, took part in the round table discussion “Ethics and Artificial Intelligence in Research,” which took place in Ljubljana on 15 October.

How can we use artificial intelligence without losing trust in science?

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of research work—from searching scientific literature and analyzing data to drafting texts and evaluating research results. At the same time, its use also raises questions of reliability, transparency, and accountability.

At the roundtable, experts discussed the ethical, methodological, and institutional challenges that artificial intelligence brings to science. They emphasized that when evaluating research work, it is not only important what results we achieve, but also how we achieve them. This is why critical judgment, traceability of research decisions, and the researcher’s responsibility for new knowledge are at the forefront.

The discussion also raised the issue of creating a Slovenian protocol for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in research, which would contribute to shared guidelines and stronger connections among research institutions.

The discussion continues at AI Week Maribor 2026

The questions opened in Ljubljana will continue at AI Week Maribor 2026, organized by Alma Mater Europaea University from October 19 to 22.

The event will bring together researchers, students, businesses, educational institutions, and public institutions, and present the practical possibilities of using artificial intelligence.

On Thursday, October 22, the final research session will be dedicated specifically to the ethics of artificial intelligence in research and the future directions of its responsible use.
