All data for the best schools 2011

List of Slovenian Primary Schools is based on the results of the National Assessment of Knowledge (NPZ), which is conducted in the 6th and 9th grades of primary school in Slovenia. The ranking shows the success of schools in the NPZ, but not necessarily their overall quality. Schools with incomplete data, where a change in ranking position is possible, are marked with an asterisk (*).

The list was published in 2014 by Alma Mater Europaea University in cooperation with interested parents, based on official data from the National Examination Centre of the Republic of Slovenia. Data after 2014 have not been updated.

The ranking does not claim to represent the best schools in Slovenia, as the concept of quality is subjective. However, it is the only one based on verifiable results of NPZ and the matura exam.

Description and Methodology

Purpose of the List

The list of Slovenian primary schools ranks schools based on the results of the National Assessment of Knowledge (NPZ), which takes place in the 6th and 9th grades of primary school in the Republic of Slovenia. The goal is to show the success of individual schools in the NPZ, not a comprehensive assessment of school quality.

Calculation of Points

Scoring is based on the average achievements of students over the last three years:

Results of the most recent NPZ represent 50% of the final score.
Results from the previous two years account for 25% each.

If data are available for only one or two years, the weights are adjusted accordingly (e.g., 100% or 50% for a single NPZ). Only subjects for which data are available are included in the calculation.

Labels and Warnings

Schools where fewer than 10 students participated in the test, or where data were incomplete, are marked with an asterisk (*). For these, there is a higher probability that their ranking would change if the data were complete.

The List Does Not Measure School Quality

A high ranking reflects success in the NPZ, but not the overall quality of the school. Quality is multidimensional and also includes:

educational work,
competence development,
extracurricular activities,
relationships within the school,
student progress,
further academic and career success,
staff qualifications,
technical equipment,
community involvement, etc.

Who Prepared the List?

The list was prepared by a research group within the educational institution Alma Mater Europaea – European Center, Maribor, in cooperation with interested parents.

Data were obtained from the National Examination Centre (RIC) based on the Access to Public Information Act (ZDIJZ).

Limited Access to Data

Despite final decisions by the information commissioner and courts, the RIC refused to provide data for a long time, so the list was created based on partial and publicly available data – especially from 2010/11 (NPZ results in Slovenian and English for 6th and 9th grades).

For this reason, the list is marked as temporary and incomplete, as it is based only on a limited database that researchers managed to obtain.

Additional Warning

The NPZ for the 6th grade was voluntary until 2013, meaning that the students included in the analysis did not necessarily represent the entire generation. This further affects the representativeness of the results.

The ranking does not show the best schools in Slovenia, but only those that achieved the highest average results in the NPZ based on available data. Interpretation of results should be cautious and take into account context and methodological limitations.
