Alma Mater Students Visited a Leading Example of the Silver Economy

20. 1. 2025

PhD students of social gerontology at Alma Mater Europaea University visited the Spanish city of Benidorm as part of the Erasmus+ program, which is considered one of the leading examples of the silver economy in Europe.

During the visit, they learned about numerous good practices and innovative approaches in the field of elderly care and quality aging, which the city has been developing for several decades. Research shows that the expected lifespan in Southern Europe will soon be the longest in the world, with Spanish women already ranking second, just behind Japanese women. This trend is driven by many factors, including the migration of the elderly population from Northern Europe to the South, which simultaneously accelerates the growth of the so-called silver economy.

Benidorm is an excellent example of the successful development of the silver economy. Over the past 50 years, the city, thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate, adapted infrastructure, and wide range of services for the elderly, has transformed into a popular destination for the aging population from all over Europe. The city offers adapted housing, advanced health and care services, and active aging programs, enabling a quality life for older residents.

Such examples confirm that with the increasing share of the elderly population, a faster convergence of gross domestic product (GDP) between Northern and Southern Europe is also expected. Key steps on this path include building appropriate infrastructure for older residents – from adapted housing to accessible social and health services at local and national levels.

Students of Alma Mater Europaea gained valuable insights during their visit to Benidorm, which they will be able to transfer to their research work and contribute to the development of quality aging in other European regions. The silver economy thus represents not only a challenge but also an opportunity for sustainable economic and social development.
