Vinko Dolenc was a pioneer in the development of microsurgical techniques, especially in neurosurgery, and over decades of his work undoubtedly influenced numerous generations of neurosurgeons and medical professionals.

He was born on June 29, 1940, in Sestrže near Ptuj. After completing high school in Ptuj, he studied medicine at the University of Ljubljana, where he graduated in 1966. In 1974, he completed his specialization in neurosurgery and began his long and successful career at the University Medical Centre (UKC) Ljubljana. In 1985, he was appointed head of the Neurosurgical Clinic at UKC Ljubljana, a position he held for more than 25 years.

Professor Dolenc was a pioneer in the field of microsurgery and early in his career introduced microsurgical techniques in neurosurgical operations in the former Yugoslavia. He was among the first in the world to begin performing surgeries on ruptured aneurysms in the acute phase. Later, through his research and surgeries in the area of the skull base, especially in the region of the cavernous sinus, he laid the foundations for many important surgical achievements. His technique, known as the Dolenc approach, became the gold standard and is used worldwide.

Dolenc published more than 200 scientific articles and five books, which became fundamental manuals for neurosurgeons. His work in the field of microsurgery and microanatomy of the skull base set new milestones in surgical practice. Additionally, he was frequently invited as a lecturer and surgeon at international symposia, where he shared his knowledge with professionals from around the world.

His work and dedication to the profession were repeatedly recognized. He received numerous awards, including the Silver Order of Merit of the Republic of Slovenia, an award for outstanding contribution to European neurosurgery, and the title of honorary citizen of the Municipality of Ptuj. In 2022, he received the award from the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) for his invaluable contribution to neurosurgery.

Professor Dolenc was also a mentor to many generations of young neurosurgeons and students. With his dedicated work and passion for neurosurgery, he left a lasting mark on the medical community both in Slovenia and worldwide. His legacy will be preserved in memory and practice, continuing to inspire future professionals.

At the solemn promotion of Alma Mater Europaea University in October 2024, the rector, Prof. Dr. Ludvik Toplak, awarded academician Prof. Dr. Vinko V. Dolenc an honorary doctorate.
