The Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor awarded the Golden Plaque for lifetime achievement to the rector of Alma Mater Europaea University, Professor Emeritus Dr. Ludvik Toplak, a long-time educator, former rector of the University of Maribor, and Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to the Holy See, at this year's Faculty Day.
Professor Dr. Ludvik Toplak, through his work, significantly shaped the founding and development of the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor. He is one of the founders of the Association of Graduates of the Higher School of Law, which in 1975 led the initiative to introduce the second stage of law studies in Maribor. His determination and vision were key to the Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia adopting, in July 1990, the law establishing the Higher School of Law of the University of Maribor, the predecessor of today’s Faculty of Law.
Dr Toplak led the efforts to establish the school and chaired the Assembly session at which many opposed its establishment. Without his persistent work and courage, the Higher School of Law would not have been established then.
The rector who led the University of Maribor into a period of growth
As rector of the University of Maribor between 1993 and 2002, Dr Toplak played a decisive role in transforming the university into a modern, research-oriented higher education institution. During his term, the University of Maribor experienced exceptional development. Several new faculties were established, existing departments were transformed into independent faculties, numerous new study programs were set up, and the Computer Center, the university library, and sports activities were developed.
Great credit also goes to Dr Toplak for securing the central building of the University of Maribor on Slomšek Square, which today houses the university headquarters and modern lecture halls with 700 seats.
International career and academic mission
From 2002 to 2006, Dr Toplak served as the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to the Holy See (Vatican). Until his retirement in 2007, he lectured at the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor and, as rector of the Alma Mater Europaea University, continued his mission in education, science, and international cooperation.
Professor Emeritus and visionary
Through his outstanding work as a professor and his social and academic engagement, Dr Ludvik Toplak made a decisive contribution to establishing and developing the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor and strengthening its reputation at home and abroad.
Thus, the Gold Plaque of the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor recognizes his life’s work, professional excellence, and visionary contribution to the Slovenian legal and academic community.
