Web and information technologies for the development of digital solutions
Web and Information Technologies connect programming, the development of web and mobile solutions, data, information security, web analytics, and an understanding of the business environment of digital technologies. The program is intended for candidates who are interested in how the web works, how digital solutions are created, and how technology can be used to solve specific user and business needs.
At Alma Mater Europaea University, we offer a three-year professional higher education study program in web and information technologies, consisting of six semesters or 180 ECTS credits. The program is delivered as part-time study and distance learning. After successfully completing all requirements, graduates obtain the professional title Bachelor Engineer of Web and Information Technologies (VS).
What does the study of web and information technologies include?
The study of web and information technologies is not focused only on creating websites. Students learn about programming, data, information systems, web analytics, security, and the development of digital solutions, as well as the entrepreneurial, legal, and social aspects of their use.
An important emphasis is placed on practical work. Students develop web and mobile solutions, analyze data, and apply the knowledge they acquire in projects related to the actual needs of companies and organizations.
Due to its online format, the program is also suitable for students who balance their study obligations with employment or other responsibilities. Despite its flexibility, however, it requires regular participation, as study obligations generally take place four to five times per week in blocks of three to five academic hours.
From programming and data to web solutions
The curriculum is designed progressively. In the first year, students acquire the foundations of information sciences, programming, and web technologies. They become familiar with web architecture, website design, data and web analytics, content management systems, and the basics of entrepreneurship.
Later on, web and information technologies are upgraded with more advanced technical and business content:
- information systems and databases, which enable understanding of the organization, storage, and use of data;
- web programming, where students learn the development of front-end and back-end solutions;
- cryptography and data security, important for protecting information and digital systems;
- web solution development, focused on designing useful solutions for specific needs;
- web economics and business models, where technological knowledge is connected with the business environment.
The third year also includes user experience, the integration of websites and services, web marketing, as well as cloud computing and mobile solutions. The program concludes with a diploma project.
Elective content for different fields of digital technologies
Part of the program can be adapted by the student to their interests. Elective content includes information security, mobile technologies, open source, networks and distributed systems, as well as artificial intelligence and robotics. Courses in digital photography, visual communication, cryptocurrencies, and internet policy are also available.
This structure enables the study of web and information technologies to combine technical, analytical, design, and business content, while allowing the student to further deepen the area that interests them most.
600 hours of practical training in the first two years
Practical training is an important part of the study of web and information technologies, as it enables students to transfer knowledge into a real working environment. In the first year, they complete 300 hours of practical training within Project 1, and in the second year, an additional 300 hours within Project 2.
Project 1 and Project 2 are included in the curriculum and are each worth 10 ECTS. During practical work, the student becomes involved in specific projects, builds on theoretical knowledge, and develops the competencies needed for work in the field of digital technologies.
Practical training takes place in cooperation with a mentor at the faculty and a mentor in the company or other organization. The student independently carries out the agreed tasks, prepares a project report and timeline, and also presents the completed work.
The university assists in organizing the practical training, while the student chooses the organization in which they will complete it. They may find a suitable company themselves or select one from Alma Mater’s partner organizations. This flexibility allows them to connect practical work with the area that particularly interests them.
If the student is already employed and performs tasks in their work that correspond to the required content of practical training, they may submit an application to the Committee for Academic Affairs for the recognition of prior learning or practice.
The study of web and information technologies takes place online
The study of web and information technologies is delivered as part-time study and distance learning. Lectures generally take place online in the afternoon between 16:00 and 20:00. Lectures are recorded, and the recordings are available to students in the Moodle online classroom throughout the academic year.
If a student does not attend a lecture in real time but watches the recording later, they must submit a lecture summary in Moodle within six days in order to secure 100% recorded attendance. If physical attendance is possible for a specific study obligation, attendance is recorded directly.
Exercises take place online and are not recorded. They are generally organized on weekdays between 16:00 and 20:15 and on Saturdays between 9:00 and 13:15, unless the course instructor decides otherwise.
Exercises are mandatory. Full-time students are required to attend 100% of exercises, while part-time students must attend at least 50% of exercises in each course. Since the Web and Information Technologies program is delivered as part-time study, the rule of at least 50% attendance is especially important for its students. Fulfilling the required scope of attendance and other obligations in exercises is a condition for taking the exam.
Online exams follow individual courses
Courses generally follow one after another. Therefore, the first exam date is scheduled immediately after the completed lectures and exercises in each individual course, so the student does not have to wait for a traditional examination period.
For each course, three exam dates are generally scheduled. Exams in the Web and Information Technologies program generally take place online and are usually organized at 16:00.
As knowledge assessment is mostly conducted remotely, taking the exam at another physical Alma Mater location is generally not necessary. For each course, the student must follow the delivery method and instructions specified for the specific exam date.
Web and Information Technologies is an accredited first-cycle professional higher education study program. The Council of the National Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Quality in Higher Education granted the program accreditation on 23 November 2018 for an indefinite period.
Alma Mater Europaea University has established a quality management system in accordance with the ISO 9001:2015 standard, and its study programs are included in the national NAKVIS accreditation system.
Alma Mater also holds international accreditations for individual study programs. The international accreditation ECBE – European Council for Business Education applies to the undergraduate program Management of Business Systems and the master’s program European Business Studies. ECBE therefore represents an international mark of quality for Alma Mater, but it is not attributed directly to the Web and Information Technologies program.
Tutoring system and support in online study
During their studies, students have access to a tutoring system intended to facilitate easier integration into the study environment, provide support in organizing obligations, and resolve questions that arise during study.
The tutoring system includes student tutors and teacher tutors, and Alma Mater also provides an online tutor who assists students and teachers mainly with questions related to organizing studies via online platforms. In a program conducted remotely, such support is also important for effective integration into the online study process.
What competencies are developed through web and information technologies?
