Recognition of knowledge and transfers between programs
to be able to repeat a year or change the study program once during studies at a particular level.
it concerns knowledge acquired in accredited study programs at higher education institutions (domestic or abroad).
At Alma Mater Europaea, we enable students to recognize previously acquired knowledge and facilitate transitions and transfers between study programs. All options are aimed at ensuring flexibility of study paths, taking into account quality standards and legislation.
Recognition of Knowledge
In the recognition of formally acquired knowledge, this refers to knowledge obtained in accredited study programs at higher education institutions (either domestic or foreign). Candidates may also apply for the recognition of non-formally acquired knowledge and skills if they wish such knowledge and skills to be considered either as a requirement for admission or as part of the obligations within the study program in which they are already enrolled. This refers to knowledge and skills gained outside formal educational institutions, often through work experience, training, seminars, courses, independent work, and similar activities.
Recognition of formally acquired knowledge refers to knowledge obtained in accredited study programs at higher education institutions (domestic or abroad).
Knowledge acquired through formal education can be recognized if it is comparable in content and learning outcomes to the learning units of the study program the candidate is enrolling in. Recognition can be done with or without a grade, depending on the availability of evidence and the appropriateness of assessment. Generally, knowledge not older than ten years is recognized, except in cases where the content is still current and relevant to the program.
After enrolling in a study program, a student can submit a request for recognition of already completed study obligations, which they completed at Alma Mater or other higher education institutions. To do this, they must fill out the digital form "Request for Recognition of Study Obligations" and attach the following mandatory documents:
- Certificate of completed exams (mandatory original copy or scanned original),
- Curricula (content programs) of the subjects you wish to recognize.
- Proof of payment for the application processing according to the AMEU price list (optional)
We recommend that before filling out the application, you first photograph or scan the mandatory attachments and save them on your computer.
Prior recognition (before enrollment)
Candidates who wish to obtain a decision from the Study Affairs Commission on the recognition of exams before enrollment must also attach proof of payment of the processing fee according to the valid AMEU price list, unless the exams were taken at Alma Mater.
If the candidate proceeds with enrollment in the study program, this amount will be deducted from the first tuition installment. Payment details are provided here.
Application deadline
The Study Affairs Commission will only consider complete applications received no later than November 15 of the current academic year. Applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
Please list in the application all subjects you wish to recognize for the entire study period, regardless of the year you are enrolled in. The application can only be resubmitted if you obtain a new formal qualification during your studies. The Study Affairs Commission processes student applications according to the approved Study Affairs Commission schedule for the respective academic year.
You will be notified in writing by email at the address provided in the application about the Commission's decision.
Tuition reduction due to recognized obligations
Based on the decision on recognition of knowledge, a student can claim a tuition reduction for the current academic year as follows:
- 30% reduction if 20–30 ECTS credits are recognized in a given year
- 50% reduction if 31–40 ECTS credits are recognized in a given year
The reduction applies only to fully recognized study obligations. The application for tuition reduction must include a copy of the recognition decision and must be submitted no later than 8 days after receiving the decision. Later applications will not be considered.
Recognition criteria
The Study Affairs Commission will consider formally acquired knowledge, skills, and competencies that fully or partially correspond in content and difficulty to the general or subject-specific competencies of the respective study program.
Recognition is conducted in accordance with:
- The Higher Education Act and
- Criteria for transitions between study programs.
The main criterion for recognition is the comparability of the content, scope, and difficulty of completed obligations with those in the Alma Mater study program.

Candidates who wish to have their informally acquired knowledge and skills recognized as a condition for enrollment or as part of the obligations of the study program they are already enrolled in can apply. This refers to knowledge and skills acquired outside formal educational institutions, often through work experience, training, seminars, courses, independent work, etc.
For successful recognition, this knowledge must reach a comparable level of difficulty and cover similar areas as the individual subjects or subject groups within the chosen study program.
The recognition procedure for informally acquired knowledge and skills begins at the candidate's request, who submits the Application for Recognition of Informal Knowledge. For students of the physiotherapy study program, the Certificate of Completed Physiotherapeutic Work is mandatory. The candidate must submit all evidence necessary for the evaluation of informally acquired knowledge and experience, such as training certificates, job descriptions, employer recommendations, examples of products or projects, portfolios, professional contributions, or other documentation proving the acquired knowledge.
The recognition process proceeds by the candidate first completing a special application indicating which knowledge they claim and which subject this knowledge should replace. They attach appropriate evidence, which is then reviewed by the competent commission. In case of uncertainties, the faculty has the right to request additional explanations, a personal interview, or even knowledge verification. Based on a comprehensive assessment, the commission issues an opinion and a recognition decision, which is entered into the student's index. In most cases, the recognized obligation is not graded numerically but recorded as "completed." The evaluation and recognition process of informally acquired knowledge and skills may be subject to a fee based on the price list adopted by the Alma Mater Board of Directors.
Candidates who have a foreign educational certificate and wish to continue education in a study program in the Republic of Slovenia must have a decision recognizing the right to continue education in university or higher professional study programs (hereinafter: recognition decision). Candidates who already have a recognition decision or nostrification follow the instructions for submitting evidence of meeting enrollment conditions and submit the decision along with all evidence through the eVŠ portal. For candidates who do not yet have a recognition decision, a completed electronic application form for study enrollment in eVŠ also counts as an application for recognition of foreign education. Candidates who submit an incomplete application for recognition of education for the purpose of further education will be individually notified of the request and deadline for supplementing the application in writing or via the eVŠ portal. The recognition procedure is conducted by the authorized person of the higher education institution where the candidate applied for study.

Transfer or Change of Study Program
A transfer or change of study program is a student's right to repeat a year or change the study program once during their studies at a given level – so-called bonus.
The essential difference between transfer and change is that in a transfer, the student re-enrolls in the first year of the new study program. In a change, part of the obligations completed in the old program is recognized in the new program due to program similarity and the student enrolls in a higher year. Transfers are possible between study programs (Article 3 of the Criteria for Transitions Between Study Programs):
- that upon completion ensure acquisition of comparable competencies or learning outcomes;
- between which, according to the criteria for recognition of knowledge and skills acquired before enrollment, at least half of the obligations according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) from the first study program related to compulsory subjects of the second study program can be recognized.
Assessment of comparability of study programs and recognition of ECTS credits is exclusively within the competence of the Study Affairs Commission. The application is available under Attachments on this page, with detailed information below.
In case of transfer to the same or lower year, the student cannot use the right to repeat a year or graduate internship on the new study program.
Candidates who have already repeated a year once or changed their study program or study field once can apply for regular study, but tuition fees according to the Alma Mater price list apply, except if they enrolled in a higher year at the same study level.
Students who wish to change their study program and have not yet used this right or the right to repeat a year must apply like other candidates. This also applies to students who want to change their study mode in the first year within the same study program. Both submit an application for enrollment on the eVŠ online portal. Applications will be possible during the period from September 1 to 15 of the current year. Candidates can submit multiple applications, each indicating one study preference.
A person whose student status ended due to withdrawal from a study program or field can re-enroll in that study program or field. Tuition fees apply for re-enrollment.
Candidates applying for enrollment in a higher year must also meet the conditions for enrollment in the first year of the study program they wish to enroll in. The year in which the candidate can enroll is determined by the higher education institution during the admission procedure regardless of the year indicated by the candidate in the enrollment application.
A student can transfer from part-time to full-time study under the following conditions:
- If places are still available
- If they have not yet repeated a year, used an additional year, or changed the study program as a full-time student,
- If they have repeated a year, used an additional year, or changed the study program as a full-time student (with tuition fee payment)
- If they have fulfilled all conditions for enrollment in a higher year.
A student can transfer from full-time to part-time study under the following conditions:
- If places are still available and
- If they have fulfilled all obligations required for enrollment in a higher year in part-time study.
If there are more applications than available places, students are ranked based on the average grade of their current studies, while also considering the criteria listed above.
Candidates who meet all conditions will receive an Enrollment Invitation at their email address. Enrollment will be possible until September 30 of the current academic year. Candidates who do not meet the conditions will also be notified at the email addresses provided in their enrollment applications.
